2011 Simoneau Award Presented

The Simoneau Award is given each year in memory and honor of Dick and Florence Simoneau who served faithfully at Camp Good News for over 10 years. Dick went home to be with the Lord in the winter of 2001, and we will always remember Uncle Dick wearing his cowboy hat while working on the camp property.  Since his home going in 2001, the Simoneau Award has been given to 10 couples or groups of people that have demonstrated the same self-sacrificial giving of Uncle Dick and Aunt Florence.

On Thursday, April 5, 2012, the 2011 Simoneau Award was given to a mother-daughter team at Center Point in Concord, NH.  Together, Aunt Sarah Lougee and Aunt Elaine Welch have volunteered for over a quarter of a century.  Each summer one or, most often, both would come to Camp Good News for a week or two to volunteer in some capacity.  Together they have done just about every job at camp – except camp director.
Aunt Sarah has taught Bible lessons, served in the Craft Barn, the Camp Store, the kitchen, worked child care and cleaned dirty laundry.

Aunt Elaine has served as a nurse, Bible teacher, Store helper, Craft Barn helper, office assistant as well as in the kitchen.  One of their greatest services to camp comes from their concern to see children come to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  They are prayer warriors for camp as well.  Praying hands and a Bible were wood burned into the plaques given to each them to commemorate their years of service.  It was a delight to recognize their selfless giving of time, energy, finances and self for so many years in front of Aunt Sarah’s Bible study group. Aunt Elaine shared with us what an honor and privilege it was to be recognized.  However, we, the staff of Camp Good News, have been blessed by the faithful service of Aunt Sarah and Aunt Elaine.  Aunt Elaine’s children and Aunt Sarah’s grandchildren have been campers as well as served at camp in some capacity over the past few years as well.  They hope to have a fourth generation join them one day soon! May God continue to bless their lives with fruitful labor for His kingdom.

The CAMPfriends family…

Campfriends is the official means by which Camp Good News of NH raises funds to support the christian camping ministry here in Charlestown NH. Through CAMPfriends we raise funds to support:

Camper Scholarships: The cost of attending camp good news is $350.00 a week. That is less than half of the budget we need to maintain the facility. Therefore we strive to ensure that no child who desires to come to camp is kept away because of financial hardship.

Staff: Annually we  hire 40+ seasonal staff as: counselors, admin, and maintenance workers. This number would be greater were it not for a highly dedicated volunteer staff as well!

Maintenance of the physical plant: We have over 40 buildings situated on 240 acres that support a traditional summer camp, horse camp, wilderness camp, mountain biking camp and teen camp.

CAMPfriends has a simple plan to help you become involved with the evangelization of children in the Granite State and beyond. For a dollar-a-day you can become involved in the support of a child friendly, safe and secure children’s camp in the heart of New England.

In 2012 we are asking 50 people to step up and take the CAMPfriends challenge to supply a dollar a day in the support of Christian Children’s Ministry.

Will you take the challenge?

Christian Camp and Conference Association Conference

Jens, Sheila and I left on Monday Morning to attend the CCCA Conference at “Camp of the Woods” in Speculator New York. We have been able to network with many other New Hampshire and New England Children’s camps as well as hearing great speakers and receiving good teaching that will help Camp Good News to become “THE” Premier Christians Children’s camp in New England.

2011 Wilderness Camper’s Testimony

Wilderness Camp is Awesome!

Have you ever considered how impacting a week at summer camp can have on the life of a child? Here at Camp Good News in Charlestown, New Hampshire, we know a week of camp has an incredible impact on the lives of the campers.  However profound the impact, it is not camp, but it is the week spent immersed in the Word of God that has the greatest influence.
Below is a direct quote from one 2011 Wilderness camper.
Her mom sent us this to encourage us and tell us how much camp impacted her child’s life.

Great Stuff I Learned at Camp Good News July 2011

  1. Wilderness Camp is awesome!
  2. Start your day off in God’s word. There’s no better way to start!
  3. Everything is meaningless without God – Thank you Solomon! (We read Ecclesiastes.)
  4. In life we face many decisions and lots of voices. Just because something sounds encouraging or is a louder voice doesn’t mean you should trust it. God isn’t always loud and clear. But trust him and walk in his path always. It won’t take you in circles!
  5. Trust is easy to lose but hard to win back.
  6. Sometimes trusting God means doing something he asks you to that sounds crazy (like falling forward) even when you can’t see him. You can’t trust your own understanding.
  7. “Be sure your sin will find you out.” (Remember Johnny Cash.)
  8. Forgive others. Why wouldn’t you when God sent Jesus to die and forgave you of everything: past, present, future, period.
  9. You can find God in math. God is everywhere. So don’t hate a subject. They were all created by him!
  10. You’re beautiful just the way you are! God made you and loves you. Accept you for you and don’t worry about other people say. You are “fearfully and wonderfully made”.
  11. When you have trouble focusing on praying, play some background music, play with a rubber ball, pray out loud, or write your thoughts in a journal. Whatever works best.
  12. See God everywhere. He’s there. Just look. Make him part of every aspect of your life.
  13. Surrender to God. Give your life to him and anything is possible.
  14. Don’t ask too many questions. Sometimes it’s okay not to know what time it is.
  15. Take risks. You’ll build confidence. Try something new, hard, or scary every once in a while.
  16. Sing, dance, and laugh randomly!
  17. Dishes can be fun. So don’t complain.
  18. Always make a plan before jumping into a task.
  19. Teamwork is really important! Learn to get along with and love everyone. Learn from your mistakes and stick together.
  20. Boys aren’t scary! They’re people too. Just talk to and get to know them.
  21. Don’t worry! You can survive a week with porta-potties and Purell. A week at camp makes you forget all your worries.
  22.  It’s okay not to shower all week! Just relax! (Camp does offer showers each day to Wilderness campers; they can choose not to shower though.)
  23.  Loosen up and have fun! Relax and be yourself! Be confident! Run in the rain, swim when it’s cold, run across a field singing, yell at the top of your lungs, and laugh! Keep it simple and love God!
  24.  Sometimes we make things way too complicated and over think them. Look for the obvious.
  25.  Stay in touch with your friends from camp. Lift each other up and encourage each other.
  26.  God works miracles! We found Uncle Dan’s shoes in the river!
  27.  You can cook and egg on a stick over the fire!
  28.  The Pirates of Pustinia:
    -      Teamwork
    -      Safety: Emotional and Physical
    -      Communication: Verbal, Non-Verbal, and Listening

YOU TOO CAN HAVE AN IMPACT IN A CAMPER’S LIFE!
